Going green is a growing trend. Whether it’s driving a hybrid car or swapping out the old plastic grocery bags for reusable ones, people are making eco-friendly decisions every day and reducing their carbon footprint.

But what about those carbon paw prints? Some people don’t think about going green when it comes to their four-legged companions, but there are several eco-friendly adjustments pet parents can make to green up their pet care routines:

  • Recycle and Reuse

Remember to recycle all of your empty pet food cans. Also, don’t trash those plastic shopping bags if you have them lying around, just think of all the poop you can scoop with them!

  • Upgrade from Plastic

When purchasing food dishes for your pets, opt for ceramic or stainless steel instead of plastic. These materials are easier to clean and easier on the environment.

  • Stock Up

Purchasing pet food, kitty litter and other pet products in larger quantities cuts down on wasted packaging that ends up in the landfill as well as reduces the number of car trips you need to take to the pet store.

Don’t forget the added perk of typically getting more value for your money when purchasing these types of pet supplies in bigger quantities.

  • Groom a Little Greener

There are many grooming products on the market that are organic or natural based. Choosing to keep your pet looking great by grooming green at home instead of making a costly grooming appointment is not only easier on the environment, but also on your budget.

  • Clean Naturally

Cleaning up a few messes is an inevitable part of pet ownership. Choosing to clean up those not-so-pleasant messes with natural cleaning products not only is better for the environment, but also protects your pets and family from the toxic ingredients found in some cleaning supplies.

  • Help Homeless Animals

Reduce waste by donating gently used items to your local shelter or animal rescue group. Many organizations will gladly accept certain pet supplies like leashes or towels, just check with the organization first about their needs.

  • Don’t Shop, Adopt!

Pet overpopulation is serious drain on resources, not to mention a tragic situation for the millions of animals that end up in shelters. Save a life and help save the environment by adopting a new canine or feline companion instead of purchasing one.

One of the biggest ethical pet problems is puppy mills. Please do not contribute to this issue. Also, make sure to get your pets spayed or neutered to help cut down on the number of unwanted litters.
